At our next regular meeting on October 13, I'll present a program on genealogical software with special emphasis on what's new in Family Tree Maker versions 2005 and 2006. But we'll start with an overview of genealogy software and touch on PAF as well.

I have updated the genealogy links on our home page; it is now 2 pages long. I have also added a list of Florida Cemeteries that includes GPS coordinates so that they can be easily located. I have also included a list of new books that the library bought for the genealogy room.

So few people look at this blog that unless there is some interest in keeping it, I will delete it. I thought it would be useful for members to exchange views and information but no one wants to even add comments much less post a message. Click on Comments and add yours to let me know.

Hurricane Katrina flooded the area in New Orleans where the records are kept. Some 12 million documents were never committed to digital format and are in jeopardy of being lost forever. A company has been hired to retreive them and dry them out but was refused entry into the city by Federal troops.

Here's a site that aggregates a lot of the genealogy news. It lists titles of articles and blogs so you can decide if you want to read them. Having all of your genealogy news in one place is certainly convenient and you get to see many items that you would not otherwise know about. You can subscribe to it and it will keep track of what you've read and what you've not read. You can mark any item as read if you don't want to see it listed any more. Most blogs publish the latest post at the top of the page and you have to scroll down to see previous posts. At the end of the month they all disappear and you have to click on the archive for that month to see that month's posts. Some blog programs allow you to create a main page that stays in place with posts listed below it. Others who want to keep a post in place and not have it archive set a post date way in the future, say Jan 1, 2010. But perhaps a conventional web page might be more appropriate in those cases but the ease with which a blog can be published makes it an attractive medium for those who want to share their wisdom.

A blog such as this is a way for the "blogger" to share something with the world; opinion, facts, pictures, a diary or other information. Since the only effort is signing up and then typing a "post" to your blog, it's the easiest way to create a web page. A blog can be an individual effort or a team effort. In a team effort, the host of the original blog sends email invitations to team members who can accept or reject the invitation. In order to accept, the team member must sign up or already have a blog.

The purpose of this blog is to demonstrate how a team blog could be useful for an extended family to share genealogical research. But, of course, that concept would apply to any afinity group; club members, classmates, present and former employees, etc.

If any Pastfinder member is interested in participating in this demonstration, you can email me either through email the webmaster at the bottom of our home page (listed to the right) or reply to any email from me and I'll send you an invitation to join. Note that Dotty accepted an invitation and is now a member.

The blog service we are using is BLOGGER, owned by Google. To sign up you are asked to enter a user name, a password, a name for your blog, select a blog template (the way your blog will look) and enter your email address. If you have privacy worries, check the privacy policy. Once you accept you will have Pastfinder listed under your blogs and you can click on it and post messages to the Pastfinder blog.
